Kingman well drilling FAQ

Do I need a permit to drill a well in Kingman?

Yes. Arizona requires a Notice of Intent to Drill to be filed with the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) before drilling a new well or deepening or modifying an existing one. ADWR says the authority to drill is valid for one year, and a licensed well-drilling contractor must do the work. In practice, most drillers prepare and file the notice for you. Ask who will file it.

How much is the ADWR filing fee?

Under A.R.S. § 45-596 the Notice of Intent fee is $150, or $100 for a well used solely for domestic purposes with a pump of 35 gallons per minute or less that is outside an Active Management Area and outside an Irrigation Non-Expansion Area. Much of the Kingman area is in the Hualapai Valley basin, which ADWR designated an Irrigation Non-Expansion Area in 2022; that designation is being challenged in court, so ask your driller which fee applies to your parcel.

What is an exempt well?

ADWR defines an exempt well as a well with a pump capacity of 35 gallons per minute or less, typically used for domestic (household) purposes. Most single-home wells are exempt wells.

Does the Hualapai Valley INA stop me from drilling a home well?

The Irrigation Non-Expansion Area restricts irrigating new farmland of two acres or more. ADWR says the restriction does not affect fields up to two acres. It is not a ban on household wells. Check current rules with ADWR or your driller, because the designation is in litigation.

How deep are wells around Kingman?

It depends heavily on location. ADWR records compiled by ZIP code show medians of roughly 453 ft in 86409, 395 ft in 86401, 280 ft in 86402, 257 ft in Golden Valley (86413) and 685 ft in Dolan Springs (86441). Your driller can look up nearby wells on ADWR’s public well registry.

How much does a well cost in Kingman?

It varies. Published estimates put drilling at roughly $30–$68 per foot in the Kingman area, before the pump, pressure tank and electrical. See our cost guide for the sources and the math.

Are you a well drilling company?

No. Kingman Well Drilling Quotes is a free referral service. We pass your request to independent, licensed local well contractors. We do not drill, repair or inspect wells, and we do not set contractors’ prices.

How many contractors will contact me?

Up to three. We only share your request with contractors for the purpose of quoting your project.

Is it really free?

Yes, it is free for homeowners. Contractors may pay us for referrals. You are never obligated to hire anyone.

How do I check a driller’s license?

Arizona well drillers need a license from the Arizona Registrar of Contractors, and ADWR checks the driller’s license when the Notice of Intent is filed. You can look up a contractor on the Registrar of Contractors website (roc.az.gov).
